Valentine's Day Nostalgia

This time of year, we receive biographies for the Who’s Who & Where book for our anniversary classes, who reunite each June; so many of them tell of meeting their spouses of several decades while at City College. We hear stories of spouses meeting at House Plan parties, in the cafeteria, at concerts in Lewisohn Stadium; each story is as heartwarming as the last.Did you meet your spouse at CCNY? We’d love to hear your story! In the meantime, Happy Valentine’s Day!See More

Class of 1967

The College's Master Plan is announced. The plan calls for the replacement of Lewisohn Stadium with a building for the humanities, and a Science and Physical Education building to replace Jasper Oval. The construction of a parking lot is delayed when hundreds of students block machines with their own bodies. They use cartons, wire baskets, and cafeteria trays to remove piles of rough stones from the lawn of nearby Mott Hall.See More

Giving Thanks Before Giving Tuesday

This is the time of year when we reflect upon our lives, paying close attention to all that we are thankful for. Here at the City College Fund, we have many reasons to be grateful. In particular, the exuberant and hardworking students we encounter every day.      During the third of our fundraising drives in the NAC rotunda, we were fortunate enough to once again witness not only the generosity and warmth of our student population, but also their dedication and selflessness.      Moved by our efforts to raise money for on-campus clubs, students who weren’t even sure that they had money in their accounts and had mere moments before class, still reached into their wallets to give. Students who only had a few hard-earned dollars in their pockets were happy to donate what they could. Some students also chose…See More

Grassroots Giving Tuesday Campaign Ignites Smiles

Curiosity was the name of the game on the second of our Giving Tuesday sessions in the NAC rotunda. CCNY students are an inquisitive bunch who like to have as much information at their fingertips as possible. We fielded lots of questions as most of the students we encountered had never heard of The City College Fund. Yet, many students have a friend or friend of a friend who receives a scholarship through our office. Some of those scholarship recipients—and all-around great kids—including Jason Ramnath, the affable founder of the new Hedge Fund Club, and Kailee Neal, were on hand to help spread the word about who we are and what we do. Generous with their time, their hard-earned money, and their smiles, students of CCNY warmed quickly to our mission.A genuine spirit is hard to hide. It became very…See More

The Bronx Science/CCNY Scholarship Project: Helping Students to Achieve Their Dreams

Here at the City College Fund, we love welcoming people, especially familiar faces, and building relationships. Faces from last year’s Bronx Science/CCNY Scholarship Project Luncheon, and beyond, returned this week to meet the new generation of grateful and deserving scholarship recipients. An easy camaraderie filled the College’s Amsterdam Room as different generations of graduates of both Bronx Science High School and CCNY shared favorite memories, favorite subjects, and anecdotes from both institutions. One theme became clear: the standards were high and the curricula rigorous for both schools; our guests not only survived, they rose to the occasion, and they are better for it.     This was crystallized in the speeches of Ahbhishek Samdaria, and Shanjidah Ambia. Very early in his life,…See More

All-Day Poetry Festival Sweeps CCNY

Established in 1972, the City College Poetry Festival is the longest-running poetry celebration in New York. The festival is an all-day love affair with the spoken word, beginning at 9:15AM and concluding at 5PM. Taking place in the Marian Anderson Theater of Aaron Davis Hall, the festival is the culmination of workshops held in some of the most underserved public schools in the city, many of which have had their arts programs cut significantly due to budget cuts. The festival and workshops are organized by Pamela Laskin, Executive Director of the Poetry Outreach Center, author, and lecturer in the City College’s English Department. “The City College Poetry Festival is the democratic voice of poetry in New York City public schools,” Mrs. Laskin says. “This would make Walt Whitman proud.” Mrs. Laskin…See More
