As the reunion classes entered the field for the 2013 Commencement, they heard:
PLEASE WELCOME THE ANNIVERSARY CLASSES OF 1943, 1953, 1963, AND 1973.
Members of the Class of 1943 graduated at the height of World War II. During their time at City College, many of them participated in scrap metal and blood donation drives and helped raise more than a quarter million dollars in bond and stamp sales, leading all U.S. colleges and universities.
Members of the Class of 1953 were present for the inauguration of Buell Gallagher as the seventh president of The City College and of Dwight Eisenhower as the 34th President of the United States. During their time here, CCNY acquired South Campus, soon to be home of the City College Center for Innovation and Discovery.
Members of the Class of 1963 ushered in President Kennedy's New Frontier and were seniors when the Cuban missile crisis erupted. Their commencement speaker was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who used the occasion to test themes that would later become part of his famous "I have a dream" speech.
Members of the Class of 1973 were at City College during an era of unrest and change that reflected opposition to the war in Vietnam, demographic shifts in New York City and the City University of New York's response to them. They also were present for the opening of the Marshak Science Center and construction of Aaron Davis Hall.
